A couple of weeks ago I took over eldest's desk in his room, now that he has more or less moved out, and while on the laptop I've been browsing through some of his old kids books...
...namely, Enid Blyton's 'Five Have Plenty of Fun'.
A kid, a young American girl, has to stay with the four children, Anne, George (Georgina - she wants to be a boy) Julian and Dick (Anne's brothers - George is their cousin). For various thin plot reasons (to do with possible kidnapping) the girl - Berta - needs to be disguised and so they make her look like a boy.
Anne: 'You know - it's VERY odd-but she DOES look rather like a boy - a very, very good looking boy!'
George: 'Why - you DO look like a boy!'...'I never thought you would.'
Julian: 'A jolly good looking boy.'
...then there's a hat they try on...
To George: 'It makes you look like a girl! Take it off!' George took it off in disappointment. How very aggravating that this girl Berta should make a better boy than she did!
Julian: 'She looks like a very tidy, neat little boy, a good and most angelic child!'...'Dear Lesley (Berta's 'new' name) you really MUST get yourself just a little dirty - you look too good to be true.'
Is it just me, or does anyone else find this whole scenario JUST a little suspect...as well as utterly hysterical?!!!
