What I Did On My Weekend

Middle son and I had a nice weekend!

Friday, arrived at geek6's (Eldanar's), and after settling in went for a nostalgic walk to our old house, of...goodness me!..NINE years ago nearly!

Called in on old friends that Nick hadn't seen for eight years...and since he is now 6'4, it was a BIG shock to them!

Had delicious meal at Eldanar's and watched 'Withnail and I' which was very good.

Saturday, Nick and I went into London for the day, and did 'culture'. Went to the National Gallery, and I saw all my favourite paintings from when I was a child. Bought a postcard to send to estelle3974 and a couple to SCAN IN for anuanu (don't panic 'Nu!). Then we visited the National Portrait Gallery round the corner, bought a postcard of the real Christopher Robin and Pooh for Eldanar.

Trailed for a couple of hours around theatreland and Trafalgar Square, and ended up in St James' Park watching the psychotic pigeons. Was reminded strongly of Tom Lehrer's song, 'Poisoning Pigeons in the Park'.

Then, the opera! "Tosca" at the English National Opera. It was wonderful..the sets were dark and broody, the music amazing and the story, full of lust, passion and violence, perfect for a 16 year old! We both loved it!

Came home feeling thoroughly satisfied!

Yes it was incredible, and he is very musical..plays Viola in Worcestershire County Youth Orchestra, working on his Grade VII.

..And your tale of DIY catalogues is hysterical!!..had me weeping!

Oh sounds like you had a wonderful time....I like hanging with my teens *^_^*. That age is such fun if you can cater to their sense of wonder and sarcasm, and tastes along with yours....and try not to embarass them too much in public LOL!!

Last summer my girls thought the Modern Art Gallery in Montreal was a hoot, the gothic clothing shops great fun as I balanced them with shops of their choice ~ but they drew the line at standing at the tattoo shops and watching the work going on behind the big windows!!!

Weeeeeeeeeeee! Tom Lehrer! I LOVE his songs. I remember "Poisoning Pigeons" quite well - one of my favorites. Another good one was "Masochism Tango".

Glad you had such a great time. Your son sounds wonderful - a boy to be proud of, and a whole lot of fun.

Eldanar IS a good cook, isn't she? LOL

Oh yes, Tom Lehrer is brilliant, and I love 'Masochism Tango'...and 'I Hold Your Hand in Mine' too!

Yeah, Nick is great...one thing I will say about all my kids is that they are good company.

And yes, Eldanar is an excellent cook!

Yes, I love spending time with the kids, I find them really good company now that they are teenagers, and I DO try hard not to embarrass them...but sometimes it just slips out! They are all quite shocked since Anu introduced me to 'Placebo' and I bought the albums...mums just aren't meant to do that sort of thing!

I think that doing my HND course in graphics a couple of years ago as a mature student went a long way towards my NOT embarrassing them...having to hang out with a large group of late teens/early twenties (even if I DID feel like the resident mum sometimes, advising fello students to 'get something to eat' and 'look after themselves') and having to talk about and join in on discussing projects and work certainly brought my views and interests more in line with my kids!....Everyone should do it before they become 'the older generation'!!!

Yes, it was a great time...and I loved the National Portrait Gallery, especially the very recent stuff. Portraits of people tell you so much more about them than photographs!
