"No Dante, Cai can't stay with us, don't be ridiculous."
"But Dad....!"
"No son, Cai's parents will want him with them. To be perfectly honest, I wish you and your parents the best of luck Cai, they are doing the right thing getting out while they can, I only wish we had the same opportunity. In any case Dante, there is no room...and things are getting grim here...no. Absolutely not."
"But..."
Dante's father merely raised his eyebrows and then returned to reading the newspaper.
Cai smiled weakly at his friend and shook his head. "I'll...I'll be OK, and maybe...maybe you can visit..." he whispered, biting his lips to stop himself from an embarrassing outburst of tears.
"Come on Cai, come to my room. We won't give up yet...and I have a bottle of vodka up there," Dante whispered, standing close to the trembling boy. Cai nodded and followed his dark friend up the stairs.
As soon as they reached Dante's bedroom and he had closed the door he took Cai into his arms and held him tight. Such demonstrations of affection had become more frequent in recent months and so neither of them felt awkward to stand there wrapped in each other's arms.
"Bastard. He didn't even consider it," muttered Dante.
"D..don't be hard on him...I guess it is a bit weird...me staying here with my parents g..going away. I...I'll have to cope..."
"But I can't Cai. I can't cope...not without you." Dante pulled back and smiled shyly at the boy in his arms. "I've been wanting to say this...god, so much..." He laughed, looking embarrassed. "Shit, this isn't easy! Cai...I...Oh fuck, I love you. Will you kiss me?" he blurted out and then blushed a deep red.
Cai stared at his friend in astonishment. Then he raised his hand and stroked it carefully along Dante's cheek. He looked at Dante's inviting lips, his eyes widening with a sudden realisation as Dante's tongue darted out to lick them. "Yeah." Cai leant forward slowly, nervously and brushed his own tongue over Dante's mouth, joining their lips in a soft kiss.
Both boys jumped back and gazed at each other for a full minute, their hearts beginning to race.
"Wow."
"Yeah."
Dante stepped closer again and slipped his hands round Cai's waist. "Do that again. That thing with your tongue."
"What this?" giggled Cai, and licked at Dante's lips, but this time he pushed a little harder until they opened to him, allowing him to slip his tongue inside. Dante moaned and sucked hungrily, pulling Cai firmly against him. Cai's eyes opened wide as he felt his friend's arousal against his hip.
"Shit, Dante, you're hard!"
Dante was about to apologise, back off and explain but then he felt Cai's own erection pushing into his thigh. He laughed, low and seductively. "Yeah...shall I lock the door?"
Cai smiled and nodded.

If anyone had been loitering outside on the landing, maybe wondering if they should be a little more supportive of their son's anxiety over his best friend's departure...if that same person had listened at the lock to hear what was being said...
The age-old sounds of love and desire and need and passion filtered through the door of Dante's room.
"Open this bloody door at once! What's going on?" yelled Dante's father, his outburst dragging his wife from the bathroom, her hair wrapped in a towel.
"James? Whatever's the matter?"
"Our son and his friend...that's what the matter is! And under my roof, I won't have it Sara, I wont!"
"What do you mean...Cai?" She listened to the sounds of frantic scuffling and then stepped back when the door flew open to reveal her hastily dressed child.
"Mom...it's not...I mean..."
"It's OK Dante, I'll go..." said Cai softly.
"You will not. You will both go downstairs and wait until I call Cai's parents. Then he will go and you will not see each other again."
Dante stared at his father in shock. "Dad! You can't...I..."
"I can and I will. You are children. Now. Downstairs."
The two boys looked at each other. Without a word they descended. Without a sound Dante opened the front door and without a glance back he and Cai ran from the house before his parents were even aware of what they were doing.
"Boys! Boys, come back here at once!"
But they kept running, running until their heady laughter turned to tears and they clung together in fear at the enormity of what they had done.
*****
It had been hard. Neither Cai nor Dante had ever dreamt of such a life, not in their worst nightmares. For a few days following their escape they managed to scavenge food from friends who either didn’t know that the boys were on the run, or who thought it was a cool adventure. When a week had passed and all their contemporaries had been warned by parents not to encourage the two runaways, Dante and Cai realised that now was the time to move further afield.
They were lucky at first, the weather was kind and it was harvest time in the surrounding countryside. They lived on a diet of fruit and raw greens and once they even found a dead rabbit, though neither of them had the nerve to hunt...not then, they were not desperate enough. That time would come when winter arrived with howling gales and rain and doors were shut against the dark evenings.
Dante and Cai were taking shelter in a barn. It leaked, it was freezing cold and it stank of rotting hay, but there was a corner that was dry and not in the teeth of the biting wind that surrounded the small building.
“Are you OK? You’ve been very quiet, Cai.’ Dante pulled Cai to lean against his chest.
Cai shrugged. “Yeah...just thinking.”
“Don’t do too much of that, it messes with your head.”
Cai smiled up at his friend. “Do you know what day it is?”
Dante thought for a bit and shook his head. “Nope.” He hugged Cai tighter.
Cai sighed wistfully. “It’s Christmas Eve.”
“Shit, no! Really? Fuck.”
“Yeah. I just worked it out.
Dante kissed Cai behind the ear. “Sorry.”
“What for?”
“Just...sorry we haven’t got a big turkey dinner and all the trimmings...and presents and shit like that.”
Cai turned in Dante’s arms and frowned. “You’re crying...hey, Dan, don’t. Please don’t,” he said, stroking away the damp trail.
Dante swallowed. “Do you ever regret...”
“No! Never...never Dan. We’re together. That’s the best...dammit, it’s the only way I want to live. Things will get better, I promise. Don’t you remember that story in the paper we found? About the people like us? They were in control and they kicked the shit out of anyone who came near them. If we can find them...”
Dante sighed and nodded. “Yeah. I know.” He fiddled with the ring on his finger, then pulled it off suddenly. “Here. Sorry it isn’t wrapped under a tree with loads of stuff draped all over it.”
Cai looked at the ring held out for him and took it with a shaking hand. It was a silver skull with cheap red stones for eyes, but it was Dante's...the only thing he had left that meant anything to him from his life before.
"Dan...are you sure you want to give me this?"
Dante nodded and swallowed. "Yeah...wear it Cai, it...it makes me feel good to know you're wearing it."
Cai grinned wildly. "Ooh a possessive streak eh?" he teased, but slipped the ring on his middle finger anyway.
Dante blushed and smiled shyly. "Yeah. You're mine Cai."
"Then if I am yours, you'd better have me," his friend whispered as he began to unzip his tattered jeans.
Dante gasped, his eyes darkening. "Don't take everything off, it's too cold, just...pull them down...it's enough...anyway, it's really sexy like this," he breathed, running his fingers up Cai's denim clad thighs.
Cai nodded and shoved the worn material down over his hips, his haste and eagerness as much of a turn on as the pale bare skin that was exposed to Dante's lustful gaze. Dante flipped Cai over onto his hands and knees and knelt behind him, his own trousers already undone and his erection nudging Cai's firm bottom.
"God Dan, I will never get tired of this... you feel so good," moaned Cai, pushing back against his young lover. Dante used one finger quickly to prepare the way and then plunged into Cai without further preamble. Cai yelped and shoved back onto his friend's cock, taking him in as hard and fast as he could. They fucked furiously, almost desperately, as if their intense lovemaking would drown out the howling wind and the rain drumming on the roof of the shed. For a few brief moments they had the illusion of love, comfort, of being cherished and wanted.
Cai screamed as he came, falling forward as Dante pounded into him until he too climaxed and collapsed on top of his lover. "Love you," he whispered, happy to be covered and owned by Dante, his friend's warm body on his back making him feel safe and loved. "Happy Christmas."
