raythoo as always)
Part three
Dante pushed through the crowds, trying to catch the elusive har ahead. He was sure it was Cai...positive in fact and his frustration at being unable to call out his name grew with every minute that slipped by.
"Hey, careful!"
"Watch what you are doing!"
"You only have to ask..."
Sorry...sorry...excuse me! Please, let me through...I think I saw somehar...Cai! Cai, is that you?
But either it wasn't Cai, or it was but he didn't have the ability to hear Dante, as he continued to flit in and out of Dante's vision like a bright, colourful moth.
Dante turned a corner just in time to hear a door bang in the distance. The crowds were more dense here and all heading in the same direction, a large music venue at the end of the street. Apollo caught up with Dante and grabbed his arm.
"Hey mate, why did you take off? It's been a bloody nightmare keeping up with you!" he gasped, out of breath and flustered. Dante frowned and shook his head, pointing at the crowd and tugging Apollo forwards to join the throng.
"You wanna go see a band? Well, you could have said earlier...you know I'm always happy to..."
Dante shook his head again and shrugged his shoulders helplessly. It was no use, how could he explain everything...his first love, his loss, his desperation and Jeremiah's betrayal to Apollo in a just few minutes?
The two har elbowed their way to the front of the queue and up to the har protecting the doors and letting the crowds through in threes and fours. "How much?" asked Apollo and the har in front of the door shrugged. "How much you got?"
Apollo searched his pockets and dragged out a few coins. "This is the lot, sorry mate, times are hard."
The door har frowned. "That's only enough for one, either you or your chesnari can go in. The band is popular it's more than my job's worth to let a non-payer in."
Apollo was about to explain that Dante wasn't his chesnari and couldn't they just both sneak in the back, when he caught sight of Dante's face. His friend was desperate, anxious and excited all at the same time, and it didn't take spoken words for Apollo to see that this was more important to Dan than anything else.
Apollo grinned at Dante and shoved the coins in his hand. "You go, I'll wait for you back at the inn. Don't rush back if you get lucky," he said cheerfully and pushed Dante forward.
Dante didn't need to be persuaded and dashed into the gig without a glance back. Apollo sighed as the doors swallowed his friend. Oh Cai, sometimes...sometimes I wish you'd look at me like that...
*****
The small hall was heaving with har when Dante entered, and there was no chance he would be able to move freely amongst them. Being with strangers and unable to vocalise questions made it impossible to communicate and so he had to try and find Cai by standing on a table at the back and scanning the crowd. Nohar cared what he did, others were trying to get as clear a view of the stage as they could and none noticed that he was looking at the audience and not the platform at the front.
The house lights dimmed and Dante cursed. Fuck. Now I'll have to wait till the interval.
A lone spotlight picked out a slim, ethereal figure on the stage, and as he played a quiet, soft melody, a disembodied voice announced '...and here, for your erotic pleasure and arunic delight!...' (much laughing and whistles at this point) '...we are proud to present, ' The Closets of Emily Child'!...' and the crowd roared and clapped and screamed. The lone guitarist burst into a fierce, fast riff and the stage lights came on fully, illuminating the other musicians.
Dante stared. FUCK! It's Cai! He felt as if someone had kicked him in the stomach and almost fell from the table in shock. He gazed at his best friend for what seemed like hours and the noise of the crowd silent in his heart. A sudden roar of approval from the crowd when Cai began to play a familiar tune filtered through into Dante's mind and he shook his head as if coming out of a dream. As Cai stepped back, grabbing a glass of water and handing over to the other guitarist for a moment, Dante called, hoping and praying that his old friend and lover had the skills to hear him.
Shit, Cai, it...it's me, Dan! I'm here, at the back!
Cai flinched, stared at his drink, then raised his head and scanned the crowd...
Sorry this is so short and it's taken me so long. I always vowed I would NEVER start posting a fic without having the end in sight but I did this time and I DO apologise! Back on track
