It's other half's birthday tomorrow, the 18th, and so as his birthday present I took him for a Christmas supper last night on the Severn Valley Railway, our local preserved steam railway (here...)

It was a REALLY lovely evening, being pulled through the night between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth by a puffing steam train (an old Black British Rail 2-6-0 Mixed tender from 1950 for those who are interested :D). All the stations we passed through were lit up with lanterns and sparkling lights and Christmas trees, and at the Bridgnorth end we had 20 minutes to get out and stretch our legs (smoke break for some!) and we stared at the night sky. It was a clear night and we saw a shooting star, really special. The station was lit and the steam engine was quietly breathing as they do when at rest, and the firebox was glowing orange and red, filling the driver's cab with a lovely warm glow.

The meal was delicious! We started with melon, then had leek and potato soup and bread roll, then turkey parcels (basically turkey breast and stuffing) with 'seasonal veggies' (roast potatoes and parsnips, brussell sprouts (which I LOVE) and all the usual things, sausage and bacon, then it was followed by Xmas pudding and brandy cream. On the way back we had coffee and a mince pie.

The carriage was lovely, an old first class one, with deep, upholstered seats that you sank into, with wings at the side. The tables were set with proper linen and we had crackers to pull, and there were garlands draped from the luggage racks.

The atmosphere was LOVELY! And we TALKED and TALKED...it was one of the best evenings I've spent in AGES!
