We had a lovely day with loads of good food, nice presents and fun. This was our table decorated for Christmas lunch. Note the centre table decorations made by me, and the runner made by Lizzie.
This was before the four other adults and near adults in the house (I'd left the dinner table abandoning them to clear up and wash up as usual) left the candles burning and unattended for several hours.
Look at the pretty candles. See them burn. See the pretty basket catch fire. See the runner with the hole burned through the middle.
Luckily eldest remnant was passing and saw the pretty flickering firelight. The smoke detector told us there was smoke after we had put out the fire and removed the semi-melted decoration (which is now in the back garden)! FORTUNATELY it was not worse, and made for big excitement!
PYROTECHNICS!
Other than that, our day was uneventful and pleasant, and we rescued the two good ends of the runner for next year! Hope yours was as nice but without the flamethrowing!

Date: 2006-12-25 08:05 pm (UTC)Remnants were all really pleased with their presents, from us to them and them to each other and both lads are at their respective girl friend's now.
Lizzie is sitting coughing on the sofa - poor love has a really flu-y cold and feels crappy, so is watching High School Musical on DVD.
Hope you had a good day xxx

Date: 2006-12-26 04:58 am (UTC)Terribly sad that it should end up in flames, but at least you were lucky that it was discovered in time! Lots of people lose their homes every Christmas due to forgotten candles and similar causes. I'm glad nothing more serious happened!
Hope the rest of your holidays will pass much more peacefully! :-)
*hugs*

Date: 2006-12-26 02:45 pm (UTC)I have to admit I am a tad paranoid about open flames (hence my candles are always mostly enclosed) for pretty well that reason and the fact that I can't trust my family to actually have enough sense to not knock something over or put something combustable close to the flame...even though they are MORE paranoid than I in most cases.
Glad it wasn't more serious....and that otherwise it was a successful celebration :)
