OK, I have several nice digital photos that I have played around with and run through various programmes. They look very nice (even though I do say so myself) when mounted and framed, and I now want to see if I can sell them on Ebay.

I've got them saved ready for printing and have a good source of mounts (other half as he is MUCH better at cutting the damn things with a scalpel rather than me fiddling for hours with my mount cutter) and a decent source of cheap-ish but good looking frames (if people paid extra).

What I can't work out though is how to save small, low res versions of the pictures to post on Ebay. I want something that looks good and gives a decent representation of the pics, but that can't be printed off at a reasonable size, otherwise it defeats the purpose of trying to sell them.

Do I save the pic at a BIG size, but at say 100dpi, or do I save it at a teeny size at normal (300) dpi or what? I've tried experimenting but it doesn't seem to stop the ability to print off at a reasonably large size.

What I need is for someone to say, 'make it no bigger than xyz and save it at zxy dpi'

Any advice?

What I would do is save it at 72dpi or at most 100 dpi and make it like maybe 3 inches by 5 inches or something. That should work. Also, if you wanted me to fiddle around with it a bit.. or something similar, feel free to email or im me.

Es.
PS I'd down the size in inches first then down the dpi.

I think dpi really has no bearing when saving images for the web, because if you go "view image" (right mouse-click menu) on any image on a web page, the image will display at the pixel-resolution of your monitor. For web, the pixel width determines the size of a pic viewed at full size, and the file size determines the amount of jpg compression and therefore the quality of the image.

The 72 dpi does make a difference. Yes, you see it online the same, but if you try to enlarge and print it out, the quality will be shit. It's the printing out by people that Sildil is trying to avoid, so saving with a resolution of 72dpi will solve that problem.

But if you work with sizes in pixels, rather than X cm/inches at Y resolution, you can forget all about dpi because pixel size by itself gives an absolute measurement of image size. I think it's simpler.
