Well...Welsh television...

Just watched a game show....

Basically, set amidst a VAST set of glittery, fairy lit rocks, there were two teams of three sat facing each other across a stone table. Each team in turn took it in turn to pass a pebble between each other's hands beneath the table, then brought their hands back up on top to rest on the surface. The other team had to keep guessing which hands were empty and if they were wrong and the pebble was revealed they lost a point to the other side.

That was it.

I am sure this is an incredibly old, traditional Welsh pub game or something, but really...it had all three of us in complete hysterics!

The cottage is lovely, just right for Simon, Lizzie and me for the weekend. Tomorrow we will go into Caerleon and explore. It's tiny and there are lots of interesting places, loads of Roman stuff and the weather is set to be really sunny, cold and bright, my favourite kind.

AMAZING old tree, apparently listed in the Domesday Book, and just by the cottage...

The next morning:

The weather today was GLORIOUS. just as forecast. Fantastic blue sky, frosty morning, warm sun. We had an amazing breakfast in the farmhouse kitchen and chatted to the very nice host for about an hour in fact. Then we drove into Caerleon. What an amazing place!

View of the river Usk...

We started by visiting the bath house museum, with the whole of the outdoor swimming pool excavated and part of the remains of the changing rooms and the various plunge pools and exercise room, all under cover and well presented. Unfortunately (as I had no slash companion with me!) all I could think of were all those beautiful, oiled, fit naked men...*shivers*....*goes into a bit of a daydream*

The barracks...

Then we went round the Legionary Museum which was VERY detailed and well presented. They also had a mock up barracks room which they took small groups into and explained details of day to day legionary life...and yeah, quite a few slashy moments there too. I suspect I had a happy smile on my face...

THEN there was the amphitheatre...and yeah...*sighs*...more slashy daydreams with angst thrown in.

The amphitheatre...

THEN the remains of the barracks with cook house, latrines, quarters....*sighs* *again*

And THEN on to Caerwent. Well, I had NO idea this place existed.

There is an almost complete circuit of the roman town walls, the south wall being SERIOUSLY amazing! And THEN, even MORE remains...a Romano-Celtic temple, the forum with offices, shops and the remains of a large villa, all scattered throughout the village and in amongst the cottages.

The ROMAN walls around the village ~ we are only about half way round one side here, by the south gate (where my camera battery ran out!)...

Back to the cottage for supper and then home via Usk tomorrow...
