Just for those of you across the water...

We have SERIOUS floods. I know that I mentioned the rain before, and [livejournal.com profile] mirien's recent write up of her own personal experience of helping out with flooded cottages and road is an even better account, but just for those of you interested...

We have a number of towns and villages cut off, one of which has the water purification plant under water. A friend we know was unable to leave where they worked in Tewkesbury and drove around looking for a work colleague's house, not knowing the number, just the street and the car she drove. On arrival he found FOUR other colleagues also camping out having done the same thing!

The amount of damage and personal loss of property and crops is really quite catastrophic, and the still pictures and news items really do not get it across as effectively as seeing the Sky News helicopter video shots of acres and acres and ACRES of flooded property and fields, homes, shops, business and petrol stations feet deep in water.

It's really scary! It's not something you expect, in modern times in and a developed country - the idea that a whole town may soon have no access to safe drinking water unless bottled water is shipped in by the truckload.

This is going to send a number of insurance companies bankrupt, if it hasn't already. Not to mention all the people who will be pretty much homeless even after the floodwater has gone down.

I'm really glad you and [livejournal.com profile] mirien are both still OK! *hugs*

I hope you, Mirien and a few other UK friends manage to stay safe and dry. *hugs*

GOOD HEAVENS! So glad you guys are okay!

What are they saying about the weather? Is there any break in sight?...and historically how does this rank, are these villages on floodplains or is this something that hasn't happened in centuries?

:(

I'm saying prayers for all those who've been hurt by this, physically or materially. It's so devastating! I'm glad your and Mirien's homes are safe on hills, but do you have some bottled water and batteries and canned foods stored up? Sometimes the water plant can get flooded if not on a hill and pollute everyone's water, or wells can get flooded with bacteria, or whatever. Just want you folks to be okay. I know there's not much hope of there being a long time with no rain so things can dry out so I imagine the suffering will continue for some time.
