It was brilliant!...

sildilSo, here it is, the whole week in relatively bite-sized chunks, behind cut for length and so that those who wish to avoid the entire thing can be safe in the assurance that there will be ONE and ONE ONLY post about the whole thing!
The journey up was uneventful and pleasant, weather good and traffic light, which considering we've had horrendous drives to Edinburgh in the past, was very comforting!
We all met up at the cottage, including the happy couple, and had a fish supper (as they call fish and chips locally) and spent a lot of time just sitting on the promenade talking and watching the sea, which is RIGHT next to the cottage.
Easter Sunday we were up and wanted to take Nick's g/f on a tour as she wanted to see a bit more of Scotland than Edinburgh, so we drove the VERY pretty way to Inverary, through glens, mountains and lochs, pausing en route at Kilchurn castle, which was spectacular. Inverary was very pretty and I had a haggis and brie pannini! REALLY good!
Monday and we 'did' Edinburgh, some shopping and sightseeing (and I had a LOVELY Yves St Laurent makeover by a CHARMING young man called Daryl!) and then met up at AJ and Sophie's top floor tenement flat, and spent a very pleasant evening there, as well as having a brisk walk around Arthur's Seat or at least the park surrounding it.
I took it easy on Tuesday, sorted out a hair appointment and taxi for Wednesday, and had a rest apart from a couple of small walks along the promenade.
Wednesday....well, we got up reasonably early, and I went off to have my hair done, as I wanted to wear it up but not just in a scrunchy and clip. The hairdresser was lovely and I was very pleased with it, then went back to change and do the make up.
Then we went to the wedding...
...Honestly, words almost fail me as it was the most PERFECT day. Lothian Chambers where the wedding was is beautiful, a lovely setting, and the Registrar was just right. Alistair looked handsome, calm and just so bloody grown-up! Nick was more nervous as Best Man! Lizzie and the other bridesmaids looked really stunning and when Sophie came in...I have never seen her look so beautiful. She's so tiny and her dress and hair suited her perfectly. The wedding was very moving and all went smoothly, no mistakes!
Then photo time! Lothian Chambers is right opposite St Giles cathedral in the centre of Edinburgh, with a large, granite sett area in front, so there was a lovely spot for the first few photos. Then twelve of us were taking by cars to Holyrood Palace, where we had the majority of the photos taken. AJ and Sophie both work there and as such had permission to do it, and we were taken around by two of the wardens. It was huge fun as all the tourists obviously thought we were minor royalty!
Back to the hotel for the reception and greeting the guests. The food was really amazing and loads of it, and the tables, flowers, cake and so on all looked beautiful. The father of the bride spoke eloquently, AJ said some lovely, moving things, and Nick did very well as Best Man.
The music and dancing went on till 1am (yes, me included, even if spouse did not manage to get onto the dance floor ONCE until EVERYONE was forced to at the end! - I even offered £5 to anyone who could do it) finishing with the BEST EVER live recording of 'Loch Lomond' by Runrig which involved much leaping around and dancing wildly!

Such a brilliant and amazing day, everyone talked to everyone else, everyone was happy and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, my head ached from smiling and grinning and my knees ached from dancing, but it was all so worth it. People came from so far, the relatives from Dorset, Cambridge, London, old school friends from Oxford Glasgow and Bromsgrove and all of them really threw themselves into the whole event.
AJ and Sophie are much loved by everyone, friends, relatives, fellow workers, employers, and all wanted to wish them well. With a start like this, I think they have as good a chance as any!
