sildilTwo things, firstly in today's 'Independent on Sunday' there was a wonderful article by Garrison Keillor, entitled 'The Party of Hairy-Backed Swamp Developers ~ Republicans: the No 1 reason the world thinks the USA is deaf, dumb and dangerous' Far too long to quote in full, I tried to find a link but couldn't I'm afraid, and there are also far too many 'bits' worth quoting, but here are just two:
"...The concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few is the death knell of democracy. No republic in the history of humanity has survived this. The election of 2004 will say something about what happens to ours. The omens are not good. Our beloved land has been fogged with fear - the greatest political strategy ever..."
And he finishes with "...Dante said that the hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who in time of crisis remain neutral, so I have spoken my piece, and thank you, dear reader. It's a beautiful world, rain or shine, and there is more to life than winning..."
The second thing, which is what I was originally going to post, and it somehow seems appropriate, was a quote from Emily Bronte, (after our visit to the parsonage in Haworth, Yorkshire where she lived, and died aged thirty):
"...I've dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas; they've gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the colour of my mind..."
