Ok, I know this is very long, but I have deliberately not put it behind a cut. It's taken me bloody ages to write it and I am damned if I am going to hide it away!!! Sorry if it clutters up your 'Friends Page'.....

Anyway, someone quoted 'Biblical Doctrine' going back 2000 years as a reason that homosexual marriage was unnacceptable.

Let us remember this is the same 'Biblical Doctrine' that says:
Women should cover their head in church (1 Corinthians 11:6)
and not speak (1 Corinthians 14:34-35)
men should not have long hair (1 Corinthians 11:14...well, OK we do all know that hippies are going to hell)
that women should not wear trousers (Deuteronomy 22:5...oh well, that's me damned for eternity),
that mixed fibres should not be worn (Deuteronomy 22:11)
and that our cloaks should have tassels (Deuteronomy 22:12....yes OK, probably a style no-no anyway)
oh, and a really good one, any bloke having a wet dream should leave the camp Deuteronomy 23:10....or at least till he's has a bath).

It is also the same 'Biblical Doctrine' that has been used throughout history to justify that people should never divorce, that women should not become priests, that slavery was alright, that homosexuality was a sin, that it was OK to kill Jews, that it was OK to burn Catholics, that it was fine and dandy to destroy any other faith's place of worship. 'Biblical Doctrine', like statistics, can be used to justify ANYTHING you want it to.

I am a Christian, a Church attender (I have rarely missed a Sunday in the last 25 years) and have been a member of vastly differing congregations from Catholic through to Charismatic House Churches and probably everything in between. I say this as I want no one to be under the misapprehension that I do not know what I am talking about, nor that I am afraid or uncomfortable to admit to my faith.

However, I firmly believe that it is a God-given right that any homosexuals should be able to stand before their God and make a loving and life-long commitment to one another, in marriage, if that is what they wish.

My God not only allows this, he/she encourages it, as he/she accepts and welcomes all his/her children.

The best instructions in my opinion come from St Augustine (354-430) who said "Love, and do what you will".

Thanks for this well-presented post on a subject that has, sadly, been forced on us recently.

I must say, despite the hurt, it has been interesting. Have read many views, including those that seem to have the idea that religion is some sort of social club that one joins and that, if we don't agree with the rules, we should just leave. Would that it were so simple!

As I have said elsewhere, give me one irate British mum by my side and a place to stand and watch us fight for what is justice!
