I was just wondering what chip butty is? I have never heard of that before. I'm always looking for new comfort food, especially if it's any form of chocolate, lol.
A chip butty, to those of you across the water, is a chip sandwich, preferably made with butter and not a ghastly spread!
And Mah Jhong (sp? - can't be bothered to check) is a brilliant chinese game with tiles, a bit like rummy. You collect runs of suits and sets of numbers or characters like 'white dragons' 'east' etc and score points. It's great!
I am so, so sorry! Yes, chips as in fries, but not what we call crisps! But the chips have to thick and preferably home fried. Yeah I know, Jai has already said death by carbohydrates but oh, so, so good!! *Has chip-butty induced orgasm*
Mah Jhongg is only great until someone raps your knuckles accidently with a tile.. Yowie... Not to mention it takes me ages to read the chinese numbers.. My chinese is rustier than it should be..
LOL This is true! Oh and we don't bother with the chinese since we never knew it in the first place, it's more along the lines of, 'another pretty one' (flowers or sesons, can't tell the difference) or, 'seven characters' etc etc. But we still have a great time!
LOL We had great fun playing Mah Johng (note different spelling yet again) with a chinese friend and her Mauritian husband some years back and it was a totally different game! Same rules but a LOT faster! Us Brits take a long time considering our tiles!
OOOOHH!!! FRIED EGG ON CHIPS!! Delicious! And funny you should mention poutine, I was only chatting to Rattie the other day and she was extolling its delights - sounds lovely!
I have to say my favourite food of all time IS 'pie and mash' from the East End pie and mash shops. It is traditionallly a meat pie, mashed potato and parsley 'liquor' made from the fish stock that stewed eels are cooked in. In fact, you used to be able to have 'pie mash and eels' which was equally yummy. Sadly the GORGEOUS shop that I used to go to as a child is now a wine bar, which is a great tragedy.
The left hand window was where they sold the fresh eels that you could take home to cook. It was all victorian tiles and mirrors and marble inside, and pie mash and jellied or stewed eels was ALL it sold. The Cookes family owned most of the shops in the East End, or the Manzies family and since they were by and large married to each other, or related to a yet third branch (the Kents I think)it was really a huge empire!
LOL (now I've got onto this I can't stop!) The book I took this photo from is FULL of photographs of all the shops, the food, the customers and complete with interviews and history! I love it! *Dashes off to read and maybe scan*
Well I can't speak ill of them just because the things slithering about the bottom of the boat when fishing gives me the creeps. Bother my grandfather and hubber love the things smoked.
Poutine *^__^* hmmmm something about hot chips, good beef gravy and melting curds just make my tastebuds go into droolmode and my arteries groan. It's just as well we can't get any good stuff around here.
Sadly that's the way with many things it would seem....like your East End pie shop.
I was reading an article in that cooking magazine I mentioned in my meme....a writer was travelling all over Australia trying to find a bakery that was closest to what was remembered from childhood. Only one even came close to the feel of a small town shop that produced excellent cream cakes and such.
Yes, everything has to be pre-packaged or perfect portions, all identical to the last, never anything that looks remotely 'home-made'. It is a great shame. The closing of the above pie shop really was a pity, the building is listed as of historical and architectural merit which is something I suppose, but it was such a part of my childhood that I just took for granted as always being there. I was so sad when it closed!
