Well, I'm back...

It was a wonderful holiday, restful, relaxing and sunny ALL the time. We swam in the sea, got brown, ate ice cream, exactly all the things that a British seaside holiday should have! Edited photos to follow when I get them from eldest's laptop...

One of the unexpected highlights actually was a trip to a local farm that opened its tiny archaeological museum once a month in the summer, stewarded by one of the County archaeologists, and showed displays of very local finds of bronze and stone age hut circles on the farm and the immediate locality. She explained how to look for the pottery shards and tools and then told other half and middle son a good site, right on the edge of the sea and near a hut circle where the cliff face (of about 8ft) is crumbling away and reveals pieces of pottery all the time. There is so much there that they think it might have been a base for making the stuff for trading. She also said that they have far, far more than they would ever know what to do with, so to feel free to go and hunt for some! So Thursday evening our two intrepid Indiana Jones look alikes headed off armed with a small spade and returned with several small pieces of pottery including two or three bits with quite clear rims and on a few of them the fingerprints of the original potter clearly visible. It was quite awesome to put your finger in the dip and think this clay was shaped anything up to 4,000 years ago.

Of all the things we did and saw on our holiday that has stuck in my mind more than anything. Thinking about the people that lived in this spot so incredibly long ago, who worked, talked, played, loved and died, all on this farthest edge of southern Britain. Amazing. In fact on our last day I went to the same spot with other half, middle and youngest and we dug around and found yet more bits of pottery, and Lizzie found the largest piece so far! We also swam in the most wonderful sea with good friendly sized waves and surf.

Also incredible for a family holiday, there were no arguments! There was one day when I would willingly have sold daughter into slavery should a white slave boat have happened to pass by, to stop having to listen to her teenage whining and absolutely classic, text book sulk, but as always she suddenly cheered up as if a black cloud had gone and was as nice as anything within half an hour of all of us wanting to throttle her.

Eldest and his girlfriend enjoyed themselves too, and carved out plenty of 'them time' away from all of us which was nice.

And thanks to eldest I also had his laptop with us and so was able to keep up on emails, read LJ's and even chat to Jai a couple of times!

The stuff with the pottery sounds great, and it's nice you didn't have to sell your daughter into slavery. ;-)

Welcome back :)

The teenage daughter thing sounds VERY familiar. We seem to have such episodes at least once during all of our vacations too, lol. Must be something all teenage girls so. Everything else sounds like total heaven, can't wait to see your pictures.

Well I started reading this yesterday, and just now found it still open on my desktop! That is an indication of how busy my life is at present. So glad your vaction went as well as it did. A visit to Cornwall sounds heavenly about now...and the pottery and the reflections it brings the best souvenir to have. Welcome home and take advantqage of those Mirkwood Elves Eldraug keeps sending to help unpack!
