Right, all you literary bods...

Middle son, he of the height and somtimes beard in the previous entry vids (and why has no one seen them? Commented on them? Hmmmm? They are short and amusing and 'Gardener' is BRILLIANT! *shameless plug*) has to write a piece of coursework in English Lit. He has to choose two novels and a poet, but they have to relate to each other.

Now, he ADORES Steinbeck (has read most all of his work) and has chosen his favourite, 'Of Mice and Men' as one novel, and decided on my recommendation to choose 'Brokeback Mountain' as the second. What he needs are suggestions for a poet whose work encompasses similar themes, of friendship between men, loyalty, homoeroticism etc.

Any suggestions?

(He's reading 'Edward II' as well as their set play, and loving it)

Mmm...can't help with poetry. Actually I can't help much at all; all my reading is sci-fi/fantasy based. Not exactly English lit. :)

Oscar Wilde -- maybe. Lord Byron. Sigfried Sasson. Wilfred Owen. Will go through my lit books at home. I teach literature so if he needs help, he can e-mail me.

I'd also suggest Walt Whitman, specifically Leaves of Grass... It was revolutionary for its time and covers not only themes of male/male love and friendship, but also themes of individuality that Steinbeck touches on. I think it would compliment his novel choices very well.

This is the perfect article for middle son to start with - it talks about the poets that had an influence on Walt Whitman so may suggest alternative writers of homoerotic verse... Oscar Wilde, John Addington Symonds, Hart Crane and Alan Ginsburg.
